Daley and Lee were ruthless in response, retaining top spot despite a furious counterattack.
Quan, whose medal looked massive on her 143cm frame, made quite the international debut at the Tokyo Aquatics Centre, dominating the diving pool throughout the competition.
Her lead was almost 30 points from the second round and it continued to grow by double digits after every dive.
Daley, who had led until the fourth round, finished 32pts back from that Chinese one-two.
