As an interventional cardiologist, he works with patients who have cardiac-related conditions such as coronary artery disease, atherosclerosis, peripheral vascular disease, valvular and structural heart disease, hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, congenital heart defects and other complex cardiac conditions.
On October 4, 1967, Omar voluntarily abdicated in favor of his eldest son Hassanal Bolkiah but he still wielded most of the power in Brunei for a number of years.
